PSJA ISD Student Councils Earn Statewide Recognition for Cancer Awareness & Relief Efforts

PHARR – The Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) has recognized Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) Student Councils for their leadership and service, awarding them a Top Ten project in the State for their collaborative Track of Hope Cancer Awareness & Relief Walk event. With more than 1,200 member schools, TASC honors projects that demonstrate exceptional impact, innovation, and community involvement.

This recognition highlights the dedication of PSJA Memorial Early College High School, PSJA Southwest Early College High School, PSJA Collegiate School of Health Professions, and PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School, whose Student Councils worked together to organize this annual impactful event. Schools will be honored at the TASC State Conference later in March.

Each year, projects submitted to TASC are evaluated based on their objectives, student and community involvement, originality, and overall success. The PSJA Track of Hope Cancer Awareness & Relief Walk stood out as a model of collaboration and service, bringing together student leaders, staff, and the community to support individuals battling cancer.

“The collaboration between our Student Councils is unique to PSJA ISD—not many school districts work as closely as we do,” said PSJA Southwest ECHS Student Council Advisor and Track of Hope District Advisor Marixza Reyes. “This unity allows our students to make a meaningful impact, and it’s why they were able to raise over $10,000 in cancer relief funds for members of our own community.”

Beyond service, Student Council members at PSJA ISD gain valuable skills in team building, problem-solving, project planning, and leadership. Their work strengthens both their academic and civic abilities, preparing them for future success.

“It is a privilege to work alongside all six PSJA ISD student councils to organize an event that directly impacts our community,” said PSJA Memorial ECHS Student Council President and Track of Hope Campus Co-Chairman Jose Ochoa. “PSJA ISD’s Track of Hope is the project we are most proud of.”

TASC, sponsored by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP), is the largest state student council organization in the nation. Its mission is to develop student leadership, promote civic engagement, and empower councils to create meaningful change.

Through initiatives like Track of Hope, PSJA ISD continues to foster student leadership, engagement, and a strong sense of community. To learn more about PSJA ISD’s student leadership programs, visit www.psjaisd.us/whypsja
